Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture encapsulates the tragic love story between Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers. The idea and outline for the piece were suggested by Tchaikovsky’s older, more-experienced colleague, the composer Mily Balakirev. But as Tchaikovsky followed some of his own direction in places, Balakirev only cautiously approved of the piece as a whole.
It’s followed by Stravinsky’s 1945 ballet suite, The Firebird. He was barely known when Sergei Diaghilev engaged him for his Ballets Russes, but in him, Diaghilev had chosen a winner, It brings together characters from around half a dozen Russian fairytales to tell the thrilling story of a dashing prince, his beautiful princess and an evil wizard. But good wins the day with the help of the magical bird.
