The Ulster Orchestra present Going Dutch with Rosanne Philippens and Honorary Principal Guest Conductor Jac van Steen at the Ulster Hall in Belfast on 10 February 2023.
This promises a little Dutch magic from Amsterdam-born Rosanne Philippens and our own Honorary Principal Guest Conductor Jac van Steen!
The first half of this concert offers two views of youth, before a more mature mood in the shape of Dvořák’s Sixth will finish the evening. Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture is a glorious celebration of student life and, more particularly, student drinking songs! A more earnest approach to youth then follows in Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto.
A declared pacifist, Britten wrote the Concerto for the Spanish violinist Antonio Brosa as a requiem for the dead of the Spanish Civil War and the work resonates with the appalled anguish the composer must have felt as he watched the conflict unfold.
Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony, with its tender, expressive melodies, offers a contrasting warmth and reassurance and will leave you with contentment in your heart.
