A landmark performance of Ómós na nUltach will celebrate Ulster's people, places and musical heritage during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026.

One of the most ambitious works inspired by Ulster's rich cultural heritage will take centre stage this August when acclaimed composer Michael Rooney presents Ómós na nUltach (Tribute to Ulster) at Belfast's iconic Ulster Hall on Tuesday 4 August 2026 at 8.00pm, as part of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026.

Conducted by Rooney and performed by the Ulster Trad Folk Orchestra and Friends, the sweeping twelve-movement suite blends the power of orchestral music with the heart of the Irish traditional tradition, creating an unforgettable musical journey through Ulster's landscapes, history and identity.

Commissioned by Cuige Uladh Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Ómós na nUltach is both a celebration and a tribute. It honours the resilience, creativity and enduring spirit of the people of Ulster while showcasing the richness of its musical traditions.

The concert brings together an outstanding ensemble of talented young adult musicians from across the province and forms part of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann's 75th anniversary celebrations, highlighting the organisation's lasting contribution to nurturing generations of musicians and safeguarding Ireland's traditional arts.

Having captivated audiences in Dromore (2022), The Garage Theatre, Monaghan (2023), St Joseph's Church, Castlewellan (2023) and St Joseph's Parish Centre, Dunloy (2025), Ómós na nUltach now arrives at one of Ireland's most celebrated concert venues. Its Ulster Hall performance promises to be one of the cultural highlights of this year's Fleadh.

The music takes audiences on a stirring journey across the province, from its rugged mountains and dramatic coastlines to defining moments in its history. Along the way, listeners encounter the arrival of St Patrick, the Flight of the Earls, the legacy of Edward Bunting, the vibrant traditions of Donegal fiddle music and Ulster song, as well as the region's industrial heritage and the remarkable influence of Comhaltas in preserving Irish traditional culture.

Michael Rooney said:

"Ómós na nUltach was written as a musical love letter to Ulster. Every movement tells the story of a place, a person or a tradition that has helped shape our identity. Bringing the work to the Ulster Hall during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann feels especially significant. It's a chance to celebrate the extraordinary musical heritage of Ulster with audiences from across Ireland and around the world."
