International Day of Families: what is it and how can we celebrate?

Date

12th May 2020

As the International Day of Families approached fast, we got thinking: how do you define ‘family’? On one hand, we have the typical household family with whom we have grown up and shared memories. However, as these times have shown us more than ever, everyone plays a crucial role in our lives, and our list of post-lockdown outings involves people beyond our DNA.

Suddenly the International Day of Families is a time to celebrate all your loved ones who play a role in your life

Founded by the United Nations in 1994, The International Day of Families is observed on 15 May every year to celebrate the importance of families, people, societies and cultures around the world.

There is one point that people cannot dispute; a key ingredient to family is the memories that are created. Everyone loves those evenings of reminiscing with your friends and family about the crazy trips from years ago when you were dancing ‘til dusk or the hilariously awkward Christmas dinner when the youngest sister’s tattoo got exposed!

Those memories are what bonds us and at Waterfront Hall and Ulster Hall, we are in the business of memories

Do you ever get that feeling when you walk past the door of a venue and your stomach does flips? Before you know it, you have the grin of a Cheshire Cat and you’re sending your friend a photo from six months ago of you both crying with laughter from watching Rhod Gilbert. We like to call that the #IWasThereWhen moment that you’re feeling; you can’t remember one joke from the evening, but you can remember the pure joy that live entertainment brought you.

We’ve pulled together some of our favourite shows coming up to share with your ‘family’, whether that be your best friend, your children or your partner.

Cinderella, Waterfront Studio, 01 Dec 2020 – 06 Jan 2021

It’s a must-have in every Christmas calendar and this year’s panto is no exception; Cinderella is coming to the Waterfront Studio to enchant the minds of children and adults alike.

From the producers of The Frozen Princess (2019) and Beauty and the Beast (2018), we are set for a dazzling production of the greatest pantomime of them all! Check out the dates for the shows and don’t forget, we include relaxed and signed performances to ensure everyone can indulge in that Christmas day out.

Jimmy Carr, Waterfront Hall, 03 December 2020

Is there a comedy lover in your midst? Well, provided you aren’t easily offended, you don’t get much funnier than the King of Comedy himself – Jimmy Carr! Through his deadpan delivery and complete disregard for political correctness, Jimmy has become one of the most successful and prominent stand-up comedians around.

If you’re going to be brave enough to take him on, at least give us a heads up so that we can get the popcorn in!

Fastlove, Ulster Hall, 23 April 2021

After all of this, we are all going to need a night to let go and relive the 80s with our friends. If that sounds like you – we’ve got you sorted with the ultimate tribute to George Michael! Fastlove is coming back to the Ulster Hall next April and it’ll be exactly what you’ve been waiting for.

Singing all of the greatest hits, you can expect the Ulster Hall to turn into Club Tropicana for one night only! It’ll be the night out we’ve been dreaming of.

Jason Donovan, Ulster Hall, 07 November 2020

We say it’s the perfect gift for your Mum but what we really mean is…we’re so excited to see Jason Donovan!! The 80s heart throb is bringing his Even More Good Reasons tour to Belfast and the name says it all, because we can’t think of many more good reasons to add this to the calendar for November.

Since his chart-topping days, Jason has brought his incredible talents to stage with tours in Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Kings Speech and The Sound of Music. Now just imagine if all of those stories somehow combined to create a love child of Dr Frank’n’Furter overcoming a stutter by bursting into tune with a rendition of My Favourite Things. Perhaps if we start a petition we can make it a thing?
